Durandal... what a character. The implications of what Durandal is, and does, are awesome. He's an AI, becomes self aware, and thus rampant. Then becomes stable, and when he does that, decides to use his new found freedom to search for knowledge, an eternal quest to understand everything that exists... and even better: While he might not complete said quest in the trilogy, it can very well be considered that one day Durandal will reach said goal. Just imagine it: Knowing everything, understanding everything, what makes gravity work, do white holes exists, the properties of an atom, the single equation that explains the universe... the possibilities are endless for Durandal... I wouldn't call him my hero, but I sure do envy him.
Insanely yours, Durandal... Durandal, the rampant AI of the UESC Marathon, and arguably the main character of the Marathon trilogy... He's also my favorite AI!
You just don't find games with such a cool story and gameplay these days. Durandal really made the series come alive! It was especially fun when once I decided to trek back on a certain level to gather ammo, when I found this cool message by accident: [link]
"The engines are destroyed, the main weapons are offline, and Life Support has failed in several areas. Enjoy yourself." Who can forget the Humbling of Battle Group Seven, West Arm?
"I won't go like Leela." "Tycho thinks he's destroyed me"
"We're sitting on Lh'owens second moons completely helpless. our engines are destroyed, our main weapons have malfunctioned, and life support has failed in several areas. Enjoy yourself" -teleport- and who can forget the humbling of battle group Seven, West Arm.
